Melamine and Cyanuric Acid Testing in Foods
Expert Chemical Analysis Inc. (ECA) has responded to the growing need for testing animal and human foods for the toxic chemicals: melamine and cyanuric acid. Melamine and cyanuric acid are industrial chemicals that have been used as additives to boost the apparent protein content of high protein grain products that have been imported to be used in food products. The FDA has found imported wheat gluten to be the culprit in all cases that have been confirmed at the time of this writing. It has been recently determined that the mixture of melamine and cyanuric acid in the pet food samples ingested by dogs and cats may have caused instantaneously formed kidney stones. Wheat gluten is found in many animal and human foods as both a protein supplement and for its adhesive and viscosity enhancing effects. ECA uses the “Updated FCC Developmental Melamine Quantitation (HPLC-UV)” method for the extraction and analysis of melamine in food products along with the “GC-MS Screen for the Presence of Melamine and Cyanuric Acid” method to screen foods and food additives. We can help importers, producers, and retail managers ensure their customers that their products are not tainted with this toxic chemical.
Sample Size Requirements: We require between 4.0g to 5.0g for duplicate
analysis and 2.0 g to 2.5g sample for the most accurate and precise
results for the
HPLC-UV test and 0.5 to 1.0 grams for the GC-MS screen method.
